Hi guys,
It's been quite soms time since my previous post. This is because I'm concentrating more and more on my final papers and exams. Therefore, this will be by final post.
I have already written 17 posts or so, in stead of the obligatory 10 posts. So I have spoilt you anyway!
I will leave you with one more IT tool I have discovered. Well, actually I have just stolen this idea from one of my fellow students. You will see it below, as soon as I finished by post.
It was the first time I consciously used Open Source Software. Unfortunately I discovered this too late, so I couldn't use it for our course 'User Interface Design' anymore. But anyhow, it is fun to show you!
This was I can give you a short look into my world, as I am typing this post right now. You have already discovered my little trick and help; the Web site http://www.mijnwoordenboek.nl/ where I translate every word I don't know in English or which has simply left my mind for a moment.
Thanks to all my readers, you have been a loyal and fun audience to write for! Although I sometimes found it difficult to come up with interesting subjects, I could regularly write a post and I received quite some comments!
After I have written this post, and probably after I have finished my paper for this course, I'll return to my personal blog which I have maintained for quite soms years already.
In short: Thanks and see ya'll soon!
Kind regards,
Tessa
P.s.: If you'd like to use this software too, just leave me a comment and I'll tell you how and where to get it!

Friends make identity?
I just watched an ad on tv from the new Samsung phone.
It begins as a really nice ad, about friends: close friends, working friends, boyfriends and girlfriends.
But then they claim that being connected with your friends, makes you who you are. Illustrated with a fingerprint.
Take a look:
What about it?
What about this: what's the deal with your friends creating your identity?
Is that true? Do those 450 friends on hyves/facebook/etc make you you? Are you better with 300 friends than with 50 friends? Are you a loser if you don't have a profile on a social media Web site at all?
Does that mean you don't have friends whatsoever?
Is it not so that it depends on your identity who become your friends?
Tell me what you think!
Are you also that struck by this ad, or don't you care?
Tell me!

Garage biologist or terrorist?
Recently, someone pointed me on an issue of Labyrinth, a program casted by the VPRO. Labyrinth is a program about scientific developments and ideas.
The issue on the 21th of April, 2010, was about DNA. Not that I know that much about it, but apparenly there's a lot of cutting and soldiering in the DNA of animals and people.
Already, this is used for example to do research about diseased which occur because of 'bad' parts of DNA. Another usage of DNA technology is making bacteria that produce substances such as insulin. First, insulin had to be taken out of pigs, but letting a bunch of bacteria produce it for you is far more effective, efficient and animal friendly.
However, the world is ready for a new step. As the DNA structure of people is known, and laboratoria are able to create parts of the DNA, this technology can be used to change the whole world. For example: plants use photosynthesis to create energy out of sunlight. We get our energy out of food. But it would be far more economic to get our energy out of the sunlight too! However, people have to be green for that (because you need chloroplasts to do photosynthesis, which are green). But maybe, in a few years, we can create something on buildings that uses photosynthesis to provide the building with energy. Also, a lot is possible in fighting diseases and creating new medicines.
But not only official laboratoria are playing with DNA technology. It is possible to buy pieces of DNA via the Web. There are hobby biologists that are experimenting with DNA to maybe create something that can help mankind. However, it is therefore also possible for people with evil minds to buy pieces of DNA. And if it is possible to create good, it is also possible to create evil. Just think of bio weapons. (I have to admit that suppliers of DNA parts track the backgrounds of all their customers)
Another negative side of DNA technology is that it is really expensive business. Therefore, when organizations isolate parts of DNA, they apply for patents on those parts. If there's a patent on a piece of DNA, no one can use this anymore for research. Also, no universities. So this holds up science! But the alternative is making all the knowledge available - on the Internet too. That would make it very easy for evil minds to abuse the knowledge. Therefore it is a very though issue.
What do you think about it?
Is it a good thing that DNA is buyable on the Internet?
Should we keep dealing in patents, or should we make all knowledge available - for everyone?

Poor design
I think I found one of the worst Web sites I have ever seen.
And the very worst thing of all is that it is the Website of a Web designer.
Grab tight and take a look
Website
I don't know where to start criticising this website, it is even terrible to look at!
It goes against all design rules ever formulated.
Check it out and please tell me what you think is wrong about the Web site! I will collect all the suggestions and blog about them the next time!

Companies existing because of IT
I've got a few parttime jobs, and one of them is cleaning.
The very young company Homecleaning&Services offers several services to private individuals, for example home cleaning, car washing, baby sitting, painting the house, et cetera.
The company acts as a mediator between the customers and the executors of the services.
This company couldn't have existed without Information Technology. Almost every way of communication goes via the internet. It already starts with the way of advertising and recruiting new employees: via the internet.
I found my job at Homecleaning via Zoekbijbaan.nl, my job interview was at a cafe (not at an office) and was taken by a girl that had this task of taking job interviews as her parttime job. It was a very informal interview and I would have gotten the job even if I had been the greatest idiot in the world. (I just needed money so I was glad I got the job anyhow).
It appeared that I wouldn't become an employee of Homecleaning. In fact, Homecleaning had no employees that execute the services. When I got assigned to a family, I would become their employee.
Currently, I work for a family six hours per week. Every time I clean, I let the families mom sign a little contract which gives me the security of being paid the hours that I've worked. Every day/week/month I can fill in the hours worked at my personal portal at the website.
My portal looks like this:
Data about me:

Data about 'my' family.:

As you can see, my portal gives me several options.
I mostly use the "Urenregistratie" option. Under "Formulieren" you can find information about the acting-out of the services, about bank holidays and about the paying. There you can also find the weekly contract I told you about.
The tab "Intructievideo" is a new one, which I have never clicked on before. I appears to be a very long video clip with a lot of words and of bad quality about how to clean a house. The final two tabs probably speak for themselves ("Contact" and "Log out").
With the "Urenregistratie" tab you can fill in your worked hours:

And at the end of every month, the customers receive their accounts, check them and pay it to the cleaners/car washers/baby sitters et cetera.
Voila, Homecleaning gets profit with only being a mediator.
That's a way of IT making you rich.

Lovemarks
Brands are dead, according to Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saachi & Saachi. Saaci & Saachi is one of the biggest creative companies worldwide.
Roberts figured that there had to be something beyond brands.
Here Kevin Roberts gives a short explanation. You should watch it, Roberts is a funny guy:
So first we had Products, then Trademarks, later Brands and now Lovemarks will take over the marketing world.
But what is a Lovemark?
Have you ever heard anyone say thay they ust LOVE their iPods?
Or that they think their new Mini is so CUTE?
According to Roberts, Lovemarkt are about three concepts:
Mystery, Sensuality and Intimicy.
(source: http://www.lovemarks.com/)
But how come Roberts thinks iMacs are sensual? Why do people want to touch their new Minis?
Companies have to create a relationship with their customers - keeop them loyal to their brands. The key word is Communication.
Digital communication.
Two-way communication.
All big companies nowadays use Twitter, have a Facebook account. They keep their websites up-to-date and provide their customers with constant information.
Just take a look at the Lovemark website (click!):

It says "Community", "Poll", "Join", and "Nominate" everywhere!
It calls, asks customers to engage in the Lovemark hype!
How the product itself becomes a Lovemark?
I have no idea. You'll probably have to ask Apple, Saachi&Saachi, Volkswagen, Converse, Starbucks theirselves!

An ode to Word
Who does NOT use Microsoft Word?
Ah, I thought so: everyone of you uses it!
Well, me too. And although I'm pretty skilled in using Word, the program still gives my head aches now and then.
You guessed right: I've a headache at the moment. I'll tell you why.
I was working on the Midterm Report for Media Use in Organisations. I was almost done: the content of the report was complete. The only thing left was the lay-out. And I'm not satisfied with a lay-out based on accidental Word-tools. I want Word to recognize the structure in my paper. So I work with nummering/headings.
But oh my god, what an effort it takes to get the fancy lay-out I want.
For example: I had already written my text, and now I wanted to place sections under headings: 1., 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.
This, Word cannot handle. It is impossible to do this without getting really frustrated and losing a lot of time. Every time you try to place a section under a heading you sort of have to set Word at ease and reassure the program that you're not doing anything stupid.
Another example:
I had written out my interview questions. I did this structured with lines and dots.
Now I dare you: try to move the questions a little, using the 'ruler' function. Move the questions from:
A

To
B

At once, without getting frustrated.
I did not succeed.
Please tell me if you have troubles with programs like word too! Or if you've got some tips, let me know!

Stumble upon
A friend of mine told me about the website StumbleUpon.
He said it was great for when you're bored and you want to be entertained.
So I'm going to take a look. On the website, you are greeted by:
You are asked to fill in your interests. I will mark the following words (amongst others):
Bizarre/Oddities (I'm a curious person), Books, Clothing, Food/Cooking, Music and Shopping
I'm a bit confused at this point. I see a website for giving and getting books. I have to sign up. Is this still StumbleUpon?
Ah, now I see, this is BookMoch.com, a website localized by StumbleUpon based on my interests.
Click!
This time I get a short clip on Youtube which shows two people making music.
I like it! It is really interesting and surprising!
It sure is entertaining!

New look!
Hey everyone!
I was bored with the old look of my weblog.
At first I wanted to make it look professional, but I realised it was also a bit boring.
Today, the weather was really nice: It wasn't cold and the sun was shining all day long! This inspired me to design a new look!
Well, design... Not really.
It is not hard to change the colors and I owe acknowledgement to http://iunewind.com/ for his or her pretty wallpaper, which I used for my banner.
Please fill in the poll at the top right on my weblog.
I'm very curious!
Thank you!
Kind regards,
Tessa

Games
My little brother already has a Xbox (Microsoft), a GameBoy Advance (Nintendo) and even a Wii (Nintendo).
But it turned out not to be enough. All his classmates and friends now have got the "brand new" Playstation 3. (Released in 2007, latest version September 2009, manufacturer: Sony EMCS).

He told me that off course every one would want one.
But why, I asked him?
1. Better graphics. I have to admit, even I (an unexperienced tv viewer, let alone gamer) can see the difference, it really looks better, sharper.
2. With the playstation 3 (PS3) my brother can play a game with and against his friends. Yes, my brother admits, he could also do that with the Wii, but everyone had this game on the PS3 and not on the Wii, so that would be impossible.
3. The PS3 doesn't require from you that you wave all the time. My brother, a 14-year-old boy rather moves as little as possible.
4. It contains a real Blu-ray Player. That's because all PS3 games are Blu-ray Discs. This also explains the better visual quality, compared to for example the Wii.
So, my brother explained enthusiasticly, now we can play Blu-ray Discs in stead of DVD's! I reminded him of the fact that we don't have Blu-rays, but he was all excited and wouldn't listen.

So he paid almost 300 euros fot the Playstation and now he's playing the game "Call of Duty" all day long.
Or, as he explains, he's dealing with his next problem: all his friends are on level 70 and he's just on level 20!

Wow!
Allright, I just can't ignore this while I've got a blog about information technology:
Gmail Buzz.
I wanted to log in my gmail account just now when Google tells me there a new function: Buzz. I shall translate my welcome message:
"Buzz is a new way to share updates, photographs, videos and more, and to start conversations about things that interest you. You can follow people you e-mail the most and with whom you chat the most."
So now we've got Twitter, Blogspot, MSN Messenger (although I don't use that), Gmail chat (don't use that either), Flikr, etc. and now Google got this crazy idea that we need another tool to communicate with others??!!!
Hello Google, I'll tell you a nice story. Once upon a time there was a world in which people had personal conversations and follies. And they lived happily ever after.
The end.

Nice people and how to deal with them?
SIRE (Stichting Ideƫle Reclame) has a new campaign. I must say that I'm always affected by their campaigns. For example about child abuse or about the ill-temperedness (kort lontje) of the Dutch people. This time I heard about the campaign at first on the radio, and later I saw it on the television.
Have a look at the commercial:
I think it's really funny, but on the other side, I totally agree. Myself, I try to be as nice as possible, not because of this campaign, but just because I think it's naturally.
In my opinion, more people should become aware of the others around them. It takes no money of strain to be nice to one another.
Besides the moral part of this campaign, SIRE has become really skilled in getting peoples attention. They have a television commercial besides three radio commercial.
Furthermore they have a special web site for this campaign. This web site is tachnologically really advanced (as far as I can judge). (Although, it wavers a little and is sometimes a bit confusing).
Have a look, enjoy and don't forget: nice people are not scary!
Pas op: aardig

... Part 2
So, I had my new phone, took it home, fed it electricity and discovered that I could not call/sms or receive calls/text messages.
In fact, that is the main function of a telefphone, so the next day I went back to the shop. The woman in the store has as less knowledge about phones as I have, and therefore couldn't fix it, so she took the phone back and I bought a new one.
Now I'm happy: I have a new mobile phone. It works, it is simple, I'm used to the interface (my old one was a Samsung too), I can text people, I can call people and I can take some pictures with it. It even plays music! New stuff for me.
I didn't really want fancy functions, however, you can hardly escape from fancy stuff nowadays, so my phone has something fancy too. Everytime I go from the main display to the menu and back, the background changes!
Have a look (and ignore my appearance):
Fancy huh!

Mobile phone
I tend to confuse two of the courses that I follow at the moment.
The first one is Media Use in Organisations. This is the course for which I had to make this weblog.
The other course is called User Inteface Design. In that course we are taught about interfaces.
I shall shortly explain what an interface is. An interface is a means to an end. It is an intermediate, for example: the light switch makes it possible for me to turn on the light. Or that rotating buttons on a gas cooker make it possible for me to cook. English as a language makes it possible for an Italian and a Chinese person to communicate. There is an innumerable amount of interfaces.
The reason, of course, that I tend to confuse the twe courses is because User Interface Design generally teaches us about digital interfaces.
However, I don't really mind that I confuse the two, I think they complete each other.
That's the reason that I'm going to tell you about my interface-issue of the day.
Yesterday I checked my mobile phone for the time and I discovered that the screen had died. This is what it looks like:

So, I could still make and receive calls. However, I could not use my contactlist. I could also still see whether I had received an sms, and from whom, but I could not read it.
In my opinion, these things should not possibly happen. Unfortunately they do.
So I went to the Kijkshop, to have a look at new, simlock-free mobile phones. (If you do not know what a simlock is, please leave a message and I will explain :) )
They happened to have a mobile phone of which the box was a little damaged. Because of that, the phone was very cheap.
All right, I thought, I'll do it.
At home I saw that everything functioned fine, except for that I had no reach of the phone network (is that the correct translation?)...

Comments
Another practical note (on request):
If you want to comment, you have to choose a 'profile'. You can choose the 'Name/URL' option, then type your name and leave out the URL.
After this, you will be facing a verification code. This codes makes sure that only people and not computers comment (spam) on my weblog.
Type in the code and you're done!
Thanks!

Please sign to 'follow' my weblog!
(It's on your right beneath the last.fm gadget)
Thank you very much!

Start
Hello everybody,
Today I received the news that I have to create and maintain a weblog about information technology.
I have to admit that I'm not really knowledgeable about information technology but "thank goodness" we have a whole course dedicated to it.
It's called: Media Use in Organizations.
As I'm introducing the weblog anyway, I'll introduce myself too.
I'm a second-year student of Communication and Information Sciences. The study is given at the Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
I'm eighteen years old, almost always younger that my fellow students, but I don't really care.
I love music, it's my passion, but I also like sporting, reading, going out with friends, visiting concerts and I love to cook (and eat it afterwards ^^)
Okay, back to information technology. As I said, I'm not quite into software, programs, the internet, hardware, social networks and all sorts.
In fact, I do have a 'hyves' account (social network site) and I regularly post on my personal weblog/journal (which is not about information technology, but is all about me-me-me ^^). I like to customize the style of the journal and put new skins on it. I also do know how to create and edit a forum.
However, I haven't got the slightest idea how to build a website or use Photoshop and I have no idea what HTML and CSS is, or what Twitter is about. Honestly, I'd like to know about some of these things, but generally, I don't know a thing about what I don't care about.
This brings me into trouble, because of the study I chose. It requires that I do know about computer stuff. After all, the subject I chose was Corporate Communication and Digital Media. My prospective employers expect me to have knowledge about all kinds of new media, about social networks... About how people communicate with each other and how a company can make advantage of it. Therefore I'll try to discover the working of as many computer/media/software/programs as possible.
The next few weeks I will post blogs on this weblog about information technological issues I face, things I notice, companies that communicate very well with their customers or websites that function very badly.
If you like, please comment, give me feedback, tell me that I my way of writing interests you or absolutely bored you (in that case you probably already quit reading, but anyway), or if you like to help me with computer stuff, be my guest.
